This October 2009 cable describes a demonstration that took place outside the United States Embassy in Nicaragua where protesters waved flags from President Daniel Ortega’s political party, and held up signs saying “Death to Empire” and “Yankee Go Home.” Some also launched projectiles at the building, damaging the entrance and one window. The protest took place after Ambassador Robert J. Callahan gave a speech at the American Chamber of Commerce of Nicaragua that was critical of the Ortega administration and a ruling by a court in Nicaragua that cleared the way for Mr. Ortega to run again for president in November 2011, despite a term-limit law in the country’s constitution.
